Teaching

Students learning about wetland soils.
I believe that teaching and mentoring students are a vital part of a successful academic career. As an ecosystem ecologist I encourage students to get their feet wet, their hands dirty, and take control of their own learning.
Recent courses:
Introduction to Environmental Science: Every fall I teach an introductory environmental science course at NCSU. Course enrollment has ranged from 200 to 400 students. We talk about biodiversity loss, plastic pollution, and climate change among other topics.
Critical transitions in nature: in alternating years in the spring I teach a graduate seminar on critical transitions in nature. We talk about alternative stable states, resilience, regime shifts, and other buzz words.
Wetland Science and Management: alternating with the graduate seminar I teach a graduate and advanced undergraduate course focusing on wetlands. We talk about different kinds of wetlands, ways to study and understand wetlands, and some of the rules and regulations affecting wetlands.
I have also worked with middle school and high school teachers to turn our research into classroom curricula. If you are interested in those, send me an email.
