Overview Our research seeks to elucidate the mechanisms underlying ecosystem response to human accelerated environmental change in an effort to forecast the consequences and adapt to an uncertain future. We are broadly interested in understanding: 1) how do the structure and function of wetlands and streams respond to local land-use and global climate change? 2) can current and emerging management tools reverse or restore the functioning of wetlands and streams?

-August 2018- We had a successful summer with two REUs in North Carolina and two REUs in Costa Rica. -January 2018- Steve Anderson joined the lab to pursue his MS.
-August 2017- Melinda Martinez and Nick Marzolf joined the lab as PhD students. Gillian Gundersen successfully defended her MS thesis!
July 2017- I need to be better at updating lab news! We have been busy settling in at NCSU. Updates on the lab instruments coming soon. We presented at SFS in Raleigh. Marcelo traveled to Costa Rica to start the new round of the LTREB project. We have been swamped with field work with our NC wetlands work. Two new students will join the lab this summer (more info to come!).
-August 2016-It has been a busy summer. We had three REUs and an RET working in the lab. And at the end of the summer we moved to the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at NCSU!
-April 2016- Congrats to Tori for successfully defending her MS thesis. She answered the question in everybody's mind: what the floc?
-February 2016- we will be moving to NCSU Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources in the Fall.
-November- Kudos to Tori for representing the lab in ECU's 3 Minute Thesis competition and a symposium at the Duke Marine Lab! -October- Herbert et al. is out in Ecosphere- check out Publications page -September- Beginning of new semester and Ashley's paper is out in Ecology Letters! -August 15- Marcelo will be attending ESA -August 15- Luise Armstrong, Matt Stillwagon, and Gillian Gunderson join the lab!
-5 May 15- Marcelo received Dean's Early Career Award from ECU's Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences! -23 April 15- Our Global Change Biology paper was awarded the Mercer award by ESA! -15 April 15- Marcelo receives NSF CAREER award!
